The term used to bring to the attention of the operator a condition, for example in vendor managed inventory could be 'the tank level is low, you need to arrange for the tank to be filled'
The ambient temperature indicates the maximum and minimum permissible temperatures for the sensor.
Something which is continuously changing, for example temperature, pressure or level. In remote monitoring and instrumentation analogues are usually signals from sensors or transmitters and in the form of 4-20 milliAmps or 0-10 Volts. The tank level for example could be represented by 4mA = 0 litres, 20mA = 50,000 litres.
This relates to capacitive sensors. The assured operating point takes into account all the external influences, sample and media variances and is in the range from 0 % to 72 % of the rated operating distance point. Within this range a guaranteed switching is ensured.
Automated data collection is when information, such as tank level, is gathered by an instrument and stored for future use or transmission. When this is automated then the instrument collects the data without any manual intervention. PowTechnology have a complete automated data collection product range called IN4MA. A battery is a source of electrical power, usually Lead acid devices are used when there is a method available to recharge (e.g. a solar cell), whereas a Alkaline battery us used when there is not an external charging source. The IN4MA METRON is a battery powered telemetry device with a typical battery life in excess of 5 years.
Broadband over Power Lines
The connection of sensors is either through plug-in connectors or by integral cables. Different cable types and lengths are available upon request. Plug in connectors are great if the sensor needs to be changed, though integral cables are often more rugged and have better environmental protection.
Cable break monitoring shuts off the flow monitor output if no sensor is connected or if the sensor cable has been severed. In case of cable severing, "flow failure" signal is displayed.
By this we mean that there is no need to connect power, or to connect a telephone line. A wire free telemetry unit is quick and easy to install and less prone to the effects of lightning. The IN4MA METRON provides a cable free installation for applications such as tank level monitoring. Radio and GSM telemetry solutions
This is the process of checking a measuring system against a standard when the transducer is in a defined environment, and for setting the scaling of an analogue signal to optimise the measurement.
A cell enhancer/repeater provides the same solution as a picocell but without the dedicated capacity benefits. The main difference is that a repeater has an external donor antenna (which may require planning consent). This external antenna is very similar to a standard TV aerial and is used to amplify the existing external signal inside the building.
The term cellular relates to the way that the mobile phone networks are set up. The area is spit into cells at the centre of which is a transmitter/receiver, each cell is set to work on a different frequency from its neighbour to remove interference. PowTechnology use the cellular networks in their GSM / GPRS telemetry solutions.
At the heart of mobile phone is a radio which is often referred to as the cellular engine. GSM telemetry devices use robust and purpose built cellular engines as their means of communication with the outside world.
Compressive strength relates to the sensor casing. For the standard range of flow sensors with metal casings the compressive strength is as high as 100 bar. Up to the indicated maximum pressure, the sensor provides a steady signal and the casing suffers no damage. Flow Sensors
The areas in which you can communicate using the GSM mobile phone network. To check coverage please visit www.gsmworld.com Powelectircs are able to offer a wide range of sim cards to work in their GSM / GPRS telemetry devices, ensuring the maximum coverage is provided.
The current consumption is the maximum current the sensor will draw during operation, without switching load.
In telemetry, when we talk about data we are referring to the measured variable, such as level in the case of a analogue, or 'the pump is running in the case of a digital. We have available a web based data presentation solution - Gateway - the telemetry unit reports periodically or on alarm to Gateway and the user can view the data over the internet, creating a range of reports and exporting for use in 3rd party applications. The variable time delay for flow sensors can be set between 0 and 25 seconds. If the medium ceases to flow and the amplifier display indicates this state, the relay contact is actuated only after the set delay. During the delay period the yellow LED lights up together with the red LED.
This is the range over which a sensor will operate. For example a level sensor will need to work over a range to suit the height of the tank, or a flow sensor will operate over a the flow rates that pass through the pipe.
A digital signal is one which has two states, ON or OFF. For example the pump is running (ON) or the pump is idle (OFF).
This relates to capacitive sensors. The effective operating distance is the operating switching point at nominal voltage and at nominal temperature of 23°C. It is between 90 % and 110 % of the rated operating distance.
The EMC class is a measure of the noise immunity of the sensor against external electrical and magnetic influences. The information is based on the standard EN 61000-6-2.
On for example a chemical plant there may be present certain products that will ignite under certain conditions. As electrical apparatus can generate a spark and cause explosions steps have to be taken to prevent this. If something is explosion proof then it is contained within an enclosure which will withstand an internal explosion of a flammable gas or vapour that may enter it, without suffering damage and without communicating the internal flammation to the external explosive atmosphere, through any joints or structural openings in the enclosure. The enclosure will be designed for a particular gas grouping (I, IIA, IIB or IIC). This design concept is reflected in the equipment marking by the symbol ‘Ex d’. Equipment designed to this concept is suitable for use in ‘Zone 1’ and ‘Zone 2’ classified hazardous areas. PowTechnology have developed an ATEX approved GSM / GPRS Telemetry device - the METRON ATEX.
Femtocells are similar to the picocell in application and are typically used to provide coverage in challenging scenarios for radio penetration, such as dense or reflective building construction material.

The housing material determines the chemical resistance of the sensor against external influences. For special applications, special housing materials are available.
A hydrostatic level sensor is used to measure the pressure created by a liquid. The greater the height of the liquid, the greater the pressure. The sensor needs to be close to the bottom of the tank and either fitted on the outside via a thread or a flange, or entering into the top of the tank and then attached to the bottom. The pressure creates movement of a flexible piece of metal or ceramic, known as a diaphragm, a bit like a drum, and the position of the diaphragm is measured and a signal is produced that relates to the level of liquid in the tank. As a hydrostatic sensor needs to be in contact with the product then we need to ensure that the materials are compatible, and any aggressive medium doesn’t eat away at the instrument. Most sensor are made from stainless steel which is usually fine, but for nasties such as acids then we can provide sensors made from engineered plastics that will suit the conditions.
The switching hysteresis describes the distance between switching on and switch off. So if there was a level sensor and you had a high level alarm configured, then the alarm may switch on at 90%, but in order for the alarm to clear the level would need to fall below (for example) 85%.
The switching hysteresis of an Inductive proximity switch describes the distance between the turn-on point while approaching an object and the turn-off point during the separation of it from the sensor. The hysteresis brings about a stable switching signal even when there are vibrations, temperature drift, or electrical variations. The hysteresis is defined in EN60947-5-2 as a maximum 20 % from the effective operating distance, and carries a value of typically 10 % from the effective operating distance sr for our sensors. IN4MA (pronounced Informer) is the complete and flexible telemetry solution from PowTechnology. IN4MA functions by using wireless and cabled techniques to interface with a wide range of equipment, providing remote monitoring solutions and automated data collection. Data can be presented in different ways to meet your remote sensing needs, with web based data acquisition, stand alone PC software or SCADA solutions, and text messaging (SMS) to your mobile phone.
An inductive proximity switch works with a high frequency oscillating circuit that creates an alternating electromagnetic field on the active sensor surface by means of a coil. When a metallic object nears this field a damping occurs in the oscillating circuit. If this damping exceeds a threshold value, a switching signal is generated. For more information on the range of inductive proximity swtiches we have available please call us on +44 1827 310666 or email sales@PowTechnology.co.uk http://www.PowTechnology.co.uk/products/proximity.asp?section=inductive_proximity_switches_131
Industry 4.0 is a shorthand term for ‘the fourth industrial revolution’. Most of us are familiar with the first industrial revolution, that took place in the 1700s and 1800s, where manufacturing of common products such as textiles moved from being predominantly cottage industries to mechanised processes involving water and steam power and efficiencies were gained through mechanisation and the grouping of people and processes together in factories and mills. The second industrial revolution has been described as mass production, the introduction of electricity to processes and assembly lines. The third industrial revolution involved the adoption of computers and automation. Now we have the fourth industrial revolution. We hear terms like M2M ‘Machine to Machine’ the IIoT ‘Industrial Internet of Things’, cloud computing, machine learning, AI ‘Artificial Intelligence’ and cyber-physical systems. At its simplest, Industry 4.0 is about connecting machines, devices, sensors and people so that meaningful data is available to the right parties, at the right time and in the right place to improve business processes. That may be to predict failures and trigger maintenance processes, to improve efficiencies in production processes, to organise deliveries more logically or to improve safety. Whilst the term is increasingly common, some people have commented that technological innovation is continuous, so the irreversible trend towards ever greater connectivity is more of an ‘evolution’ that a ‘revolution’. Either way, industry authorities agree that understanding and embracing these amazing technologies will be increasingly essential to business survival.
When an analogue or digital signal is interfaced into a remote monitoring device then this is the input. The IN4MA METRON range of GSM / GPRS telemetry units have 4 inputs or more.
The term 'internet of things' is also known as Machine to Machine which in turn is often abbreviated to M2M and relates to the field of remote monitoring and control, or telemetry. M2M refers to communications between machines usually using the GSM mobile phone network, but it can equally relate to communication between the machine and humans. For more information on the range of M2M solutions we have available please call us on +44 1827 310666 or email sales@PowTechnology.co.uk
On for example a chemical plant there may be present certain products that will ignite under certain conditions. As electrical apparatus can generate a spark and cause explosions steps have to be taken to prevent this. When something is classified as being intrinsically safe it means that even under fault conditions it will not create a spark. There are different classifications depending on the products and the likelihood of them being present.
Inventory control is a means of optimising the supply chain, whereby the supplier becomes responsible for maintaining the customers inventory levels and can be achieved using the IN4MA system from PowTechnology. This means the supplier needs access to the customers stock levels and the use of vendor managed inventory software allows this. This means the manufacturer generates the order, not the customer. For example, the METRON is used to monitor the level of chemical within a storage tank on a customer’s site. This information is then available to the supplier via the data acquisition software, normally by using the internet. An alarm is sent when the product level goes below a ‘re-order’ point, and sent directly to the relevant department by fax or email, who are then able to respond and send a tanker as required. VMI improves customer service, reducing the need for the customer to monitor the level and then place an order. It also reduces errors in ordering and ensures there are no part loads or returned tankers and therefore reducing logistic and transportation costs.
A level sensor is used to measure the volume of product within a storage tank. There are different techniques available, such as hydrostatic and ultrasonic. Different applications require different solutions. The actual height of the product is measured and then converted into volume by data acquisition software. Level Sensors
The time between data samples being taken. For example in a vendor managed inventory application the log interval could be say 30 minutes, meaning that the level of the tank is measured and recorded every 30 minutes Radio and GSM telemetry solutions

A macrocell is an outdoor cell that provides coverage to a relatively large area. The antennas are predominantly located on masts or rooftops. Such cells are sometimes referred to as umbrella cells.
This term is used to describe the main computer where data is sent to, and messages are sent from. For example it is the location where the vendor managed inventory software is run, the data stored and from which alarms are issued by email or fax. We call it Gateway
For each flow sensor, data corresponding to its own nominal flow is measured – which is the normal flow expected to pass the flow sensor. This is necessary because response characteristic curves of sensors are non-linear. Consequently the various sensor characteristics depend on the location of the chosen operating point on the curve. As a rule, the nominal flow-point is set in the middle of the portion of the (simple logarithmic representation of the characteristic) curve which appears to be linear. For this operating point, the following values may be defined: switching on and off times, stand by time, hysteresis and temperature response. A picocell is typically used to provide coverage in challenging scenarios for radio penetration, such as dense or reflective building construction material.
To program - To setup and configure a device, such as a wireless monitor to operate in the manner required for the specific application.
The protective system indicates the protection of the sensors against penetration of foreign bodies and water according to EN60529.
A signal from a flowmeter or power meter. For example a flow meter could give a pulse once per litre.
What is Radio Telemetry? Radio telemetry is the communication of Analogue (4-20mA, 0-10V), Digital (on/off), Pulse count (for example from a flow meter) or Serial Data (RS232/485) without the use of wires. Radio telemetry systems are generally used when it is too far for cable to be cost effective, when a telephone line is too expensive - for installation and/or line rental, when there are no available cores left in current cable system or there are certain time constraints. There are different frequencies available across the globe for radio telemetry systems and even within the UK there are a number of bands available for use over different ranges (how far the signal will be sent) and band widths. For example there is a delicensed radio telemetry band at 458MHz in the United Kingdom. With this you can transmit 500mW ERO and therefore communicate over approximately 20km. Line of sight is not essential but obstacles reduce the range You can have different types of radio telemetry network, such as Point to Point, One to Many, Many to One, Network - where data goes between any number of sites. You can also use repeaters - when communications not directly possible, because of an obstruction (such as a hill) or distance too great. What is Meant by Remote Inventory Management? Remote Inventory Management is the use of remote level sensing technology to measure and report the level of any type of substance, with data and high or low level alerts accessible from a remote location. The use of remote level monitoring helps to significantly reduce bulk distribution (fuel, oil, AdBlue) and collection (waste, recycling) costs. By knowing when a tank needs attention, efficient logistics can be planned and costs reduced. Moreover, service and supply contracts can be won and retained by offering enhanced service levels to end-users and removing the responsibility for them to check their own levels and arrange deliveries/collections. Personal, process and environmental safety is also protected by avoiding run-outs and overspills.
What is Meant by Remote Level Gauge? A remote level gauge is used to measure and report level in the remote level monitoring of any type of substance, with data and possibly high or low level alerts accessible from a remote location. PowTechnology offer over 25 years of experience in sensing and instrumentation, empowering the Industrial Internet of Things by connecting sensors to the cloud. Many applications involve remote level monitoring of tanks, silos, rivers, reservoirs, sewers for bulk collection and deliver, flood protection, security, safety and the environment. This relates to capacitive sensors. The repeating accuracy describes the maintenance of the switching point after the repeated immersing in the liquid under specified circumstances. Our sensors have typical tolerances of less than 3 % of the effective operating point.
The reverse polarity protection prevents destruction of the sensor by a reversal of the polarity of the voltage supply.
SCADA stands for Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition. So what does this mean? Essentially SCADA is a software package designed to display information, log data and show alarms. This can be graphical and tabular formats, words or pictures. SCADA is used in many industrial processes such as manufacturing, power generation, water and chemical. The size of a SCADA system can vary greatly. SCADA can be used to monitor and control plant or equipment. The control may be automatic, or initiated by operator commands. The data acquisition is accomplished firstly by the RTU's (Remote Terminal Units, in our case the Metron). The central host will scan the RTU's or the RTU’s will report in Data can be of three main types. Analogue data (ie real numbers) will be trended (ie placed in graphs). Digital data (on/off) may have alarms attached to one state or the other. Pulse data (eg counting revolutions of a meter) is normally accumulated or counted.
Devices used to detect and measure products and variables, such as temperature, and to convert such signals into a useable format, such as 4-20mA. Sensor Solutions Sensor Applications Flow Sensors Level Sensors Ultrasonic Sensors Optical Sensors Colour Sensors
The short circuit protection ensures the sensor against destruction through a short circuit on the output. After removal of the fault, the output is reactivated. Where a maximum overload current is listed, this should not be exceeded.
The start-up time is the period of time required by the flow detector to reach a stable state after the operating voltage has been switched on. Prerequisite is that the medium flows at the rated velocity and that the sensor has adapted to the temperature of the medium before switching the supply voltage on. The start-up time is prolonged in a static medium and reduced if the medium flows faster than the rated value.
The supply voltage is the voltage range within which sensors function safely. For direct current supplies it must be ensured that the limits are maintained even including residual ripple.
The operating distances are given for an ambient temperature of 23°C. In the permissible temperature range the operating distance varies by less than 15 % from the value at 23°C. The temperature of the measured object has no influence on the switch point. Inuctive Proximity Sensors
The switching current indicates the maximum continuous current for the switching output of the device. For PNP outputs this value applies to an ambient temperature of 25 C. At higher temperatures the maximum switching current is reduced.
This relates to capacitive sensors. The maximum switching frequency of the sensor is determined at nominal switching point Sp when immersing in the water.
The maximum switching frequency of an inductive proximity switch is determined at half rated operating distance sn with standard measurement plates to EN 60947-5-2 Inuctive Proximity Sensors
This depends on the type of sensor being deployed. For example, capacitive level sensors react to conductive materials and non-conductive materials with a dielectrically constant Epsilon >1. The switching point depends on the material. When the sensor-tip is immersed in a fluid, a switching command inside the device is triggered. This trigger is set between contact with the liquid and some mm more into the liquid. This distance between the tip of the sensor and the trigger is the nominal switching point. The immersion-distance has a negative sign, e. g. -8 mm. The water content of an object or a liquid has a decisive influence on the switching point. A high humidity content increases the switching point considerably. If the sensor is moistened with conductive materials, its function can be impaired when a conductive film builds up, that electrically connects the sensor electrode with a metallic conducting side. For an ultrasonic sensor the switching point is the distance from the sensor face at which the output is switched on or off.
This relates to capacitive sensors. The operating distances are given for an ambient temperature of 23C. In the permissible temperature range the switching point varies by less than 15 % from the value at 23C. The temperature of the measured object has no influence on the switch point.
The switching power indicates the maximum power that can be placed on the output relays.
The switching voltage indicates the maximum voltage (including residual ripple) to be switched by the relay output.
86% of deliveries are inefficient - the use of remote level monitoring provides tank inventory visibility and helps to significantly reduce the number of inefficient deliveries, dramatically bringing down distribution costs. As the cost of fuel continues to go up, the demands from customers get greater and as competiton increases the need for remote tank level monitoring has never been higher and the benefits are clear. Having tank inventory visibility can make cost savings immediately with 24% fewer deliveries needed.
Telematics is often confused with telemetry. Telemetry can be the remote monitoring of anything, whether it be moving or stationary, whereas Telematics refers to moving objects, such as cars, fuel tanks and the like, and is generally concerned about their whereabouts or location. It is possible to combine Telemetry with Telematics. For more information on the range of Telematics we have available please call us on +44 1827 310666 or email sales@PowTechnology.co.uk
What is Telemetry? Telemetry is the remote measurement or the remote collection of data which can be physical, environmental or biological. Telemetry is typically used to gather data from distant, inaccessible locations, or when data collection would be dangerous or difficult for a variety of reasons. In telemetry, specialized instruments perform measurements of physical quantities, and store or transmit the resulting signal - sometimes after some initial signal processing or conversion. For more information on the range of Telemetry solutions we have available please call us on +44 1827 310666 or email sales@PowTechnology.co.uk
A Telemetry system usually comprises a sensor, such as a level sensor, a telemetry unit (or an RTU), a means of communications, such as the mobile phone network and a means fo collecting and displaying the data. PowTechnology telemetry devices are affordable, flexible, easy to install, configure and test. We can provide all or part of your telemetry system, working with you to give you what you want, with sensors, communications, data collection & presentation and ERP interfaces. We have devices that can run from batteries, solar cells or other sources of power. Our designs have been recognised and rewarded for their engineering excellence.
Temperature gradient applies to the range of thermal transfer flow sensors. It is the change of the medium´s temperature within a defined period of time is called temperature gradient. These flow sensorshave a temperature gradient up to 250 K/min. for water. If the change of medium temperature exceeds this value, there will be a malfunction of the flow controller. Flow Sensors
The temperature range for which a sensor is rated. Applies to the medium (product) to be monitored.
Ultrasonic sensors use sound waves to measure distance. A sensor would normally be mounted at the top of a tank and direct a sound wave down towards the surface of the product. When the sound wave hits the product it is reflected and returned to the sensor. The greater the distance between the sensor and the product, the longer it will take for the sound wave to travel down and back up again. The sensors calculate this time interval and give a signal proportional to the distance. They also compensate for the changes in the speed of sound due to changes in temperature. Ultrasonic sensors are not suitable for use in all applications. If the product gives off vapours then this can effect the measurement, and if there is foam on the surface then the sound wave will be scattered and the sensor will not receive a signal that it is able to process accurately. For more information on the range of ultrasonic sensors we have available please call us on +44 1827 310666 or email sales@PowTechnology.co.uk
This relates to capacitive sensors. The usable operating point is in the entire allowable temperature and voltage range is between 80 % and 120 % of the effective operating distance.

Remote Web Inventory Management/ Vendor Managed Inventory/ VMI is the use of remote level sensing technology to measure and report the level of any type of substance, to significantly reduce the cost of bulk distribution (fuel, oil, AdBlue) and collection (waste, recycling). By knowing when a tank needs attention, efficient logistics can be planned and costs reduced. No wasted journeys, panic deliveries/collections or part load returns. Moreover, service and supply contracts can be won and retained by offering enhanced service levels to end-users and removing the responsibility for them to check their own levels and arrange deliveries/collections. Personal, process and environmental safety is also protected by avoiding run-outs and overspills as well as maximising margins by avoiding the need to stop production. PowTechnology technology can accomodate any shape or size of tank and contents may be liquid, gas, powder and even granules. Telemetry devices are afforable, easily installed and can report data from up to four tanks. Data and alerts are sent wirelessly at user-defined intervals to unlimited authorised users, wherever they have web access... to smart devices, laptops, desktops. MetronView is our standalone cloud, with customisable dashboards, reporting & alarms. It is a highly secure and scalable IoT solution, processing millions of readings daily and offers an API, so data can be collected by other data platforms. More here. For bulk collecion and distribution applications, PowTechnology offer a bespoke portal, MetronTMS. Thresholds can be configured for individual tanks to alert customers when tanks are reaching amber and red alert low levels and even predict when individual tanks will need filling, based on recent usage. Tanks can be plotted on a map, by colour code and postcode to enable efficient logistics planning. More here.
