The people of Cockermouth wanted us to reduce the risk of flooding to their homes and businesses… The barrier will complement the overall scheme, which is using a series of embankments, walls and gates to reduce the risk of flooding to 360 homes and 55 businesses in Cockermouth.

The Task
Cockermouth has suffered severe flooding events in recent history. The Environment Agency were looking for the most efficient, cost effective and sustainable solution to provide protection for a ‘one-in-100-year event’.
The Solution
The EA and local council commissioned a flood defence scheme, including a self-closing flood barrier, which incorporated PowTechnology’s Metron IIoT technology, to lessen the flood risk to 360 homes and 55 businesses.
The Result
As water levels rise, the flood barrier rises into position. This can block emergency exit routes from occupied buildings. PowTechnology’s solution measures water level and activates beacons and sirens, alerting occupants that the barrier is rising, in time to evacuate and avoid inundation.
