Ryan Parsons Celebrates His First Anniversary As Commercial Manager At PowTechnology

News

PowTechnology wish a very happy first work anniversary to Ryan Parsons, our Commercial Manager!! This new role was created as a response to rapid business growth and the increasing complexity of our customers’ IIoT requirements. As such, it had a broad remit, with massive potential to evolve. We asked Ryan for his thoughts on his first 12 months in the role:

“Busy! Challenging! Brilliant! Some things have panned out exactly as expected and there have been a few surprises too!

I knew PowTechnology from previous roles. I’d been impressed with their IIoT technology and corporate culture, so joining the team seemed an obvious progression to develop my skills and experience. That’s definitely happened! PowTechnology is an exceptional work environment and I’d like to thank my colleagues for their training and support. I also appreciate the autonomy I have. I have genuine freedom to use my initiative and help customers achieve their digitalisation objectives to the best of my personal abilities.

I’ve enjoyed the challenge of the steep learning curve! In previous roles, customers came from different industries, but they were generally using the same solution to achieve the same objectives.

One surprise has been the sheer variety of IIoT objectives. Not only do customers come from a massive range of industries, but they use our IIoT building blocks in a huge range of different applications …. and to achieve vastly different corporate goals! It could be sustainability, cost reduction, compliancecreating new revenue streams or innovating for competitive advantage. I love that!

Essentially, we are connecting sensors and instrumentation to the cloud, but the sensors can be flow, level, temperature, pressure, vibration, humidity, pH, salinity … every day brings something new and often unexpected! I’ve actually seen people tapping silos with a hammer on a stick, trying to guess how much is inside by the sound they make!

It was great to see the benefits digitalisation brought to so many different people within that customer's organisation first hand; from improved inventory management on customer sites (improved service), reduced number of tankers needed on the road to deliver the same amount of product (cost reductions and sustainability) and, of course, the poor folk that no longer have to brave our great British weather to tap a silo with a hammer!

Our solutions are designed to be simple to install, with remote configuration and all of the data easily available on our powerful MetronView platform. Some of the alternatives/ cost of not digitalising baffles me.

It's a fascinating role! I’ve been three storeys up, on top of a tank farm, surveying for tank level monitoring and vendor managed inventory. I’ve helped prove kit to check salinity levels in Scottish road gritters. I’ve worked on enhancements to the Ardent Fuel-It SMART fuel tank, the IIoT solution that first introduced me to PowTechnology. I’ve helped deliver industry-leading adhesive dispense solutions, set up SMART condition monitoring on a CHP plant and discussed energy management on a quarry. That's a varied role!

I‘ve learnt that any organisation can harness benefits from digitalisation. I’m still relatively new, so I totally understand that new technology and terminology can be daunting, but I also believe digitalisation is essential to remain effective and competitive, especially at a time when sustainability is such a focus.

My approach is consultative. I’m here to make life easy for our customers. They tell me what they need to achieve and I collaborate with my colleagues to deliver that. It’s extremely satisfying to be involved throughout the development, delivery and support of a project, accompanying my customer on their digital transformation journey.

My first year was extra special, because PowTechnology became a Siemens Measurement Intelligence Solutions Partner! It was the culmination of a long relationship, but it was wonderful to be formally recognised for integrating Siemens instrumentation into end-to-end IIoT solutions. The relationship has helped us get more involved in sectors like quarrying, construction, agriculture and chemicals and we’ve become specialists in instrumentation like Siemens SCM IQ SMART condition monitoring.

Another real highlight has been the trade shows. In 2024 alone we’ve exhibited and presented at Instrumentation Live, Siemens Measurement Instrumentation Product Launch, CHEMUK and Hillhead and I’ve visited several more. It’s exhilarating! We get approached about all kinds of new applications and emerging needs from new sectors- it really gets the creative juices flowing!

The shows are pretty full-on, fun and even silly at times! I entertained colleagues and customers with a bit of juggling at CHEMUK … I suspect that a few new prospects remembered us for that when we followed up!

PowTechnology is a dynamic, ambitious organisation, creating industry-leading IIoT solutions. I’m proud to be a key part of that process!”
